Wheel powder coating is the most durable finish you can put on a wheel, and the reason is simple: it is cured, not dried. It is also, in our Costa Mesa shop, the moment most people change the look of the car.
Why powder coat rather than paint
Wet paint dries by solvent evaporation. Powder is applied dry, electrostatically, then baked — it flows out and chemically cross-links into a single continuous shell. The practical result:
- Harder. Far more resistant to stone chips and kerb scuffing.
- Better chemical resistance. Brake dust, road salt and wheel cleaner do not attack it the way they attack lacquer.
- No runs, even coverage across spokes and inner barrels, where wet paint struggles.
- Consistent across a set — four wheels come out of the same oven cycle looking identical.
The process
- Strip. Old finish removed completely. Powder over a failing existing finish just fails with it.
- Repair. Any curb rash or corrosion is fixed first — coating does not hide damage, it highlights it.
- Prep and prime. Blasted and cleaned so the powder has something to key into.
- Coat. Powder applied electrostatically.
- Cure. Oven cycle at roughly 200°C. This step cannot be shortened, and it is the step that cannot be done anywhere but a shop.
Finishes people actually pick
Satin black and gloss black remain the most requested, followed by gunmetal and bronze — bronze in particular has taken over on grey, white and dark blue cars. We also do candy and metallic finishes, and colour-matching to a manufacturer code.
If you are already repairing a set, a colour change adds surprisingly little. The strip and prep work is the same either way.
Where this happens
Costa Mesa only. An oven is not a mobile item, so powder coating is not part of our Las Vegas mobile service. Pair it with caliper paint — the two together change the look of a car more than either alone.

Common questions
How long does wheel powder coating take?
A full set is generally next-day, because stripping, repairing, coating and curing are sequential and the cure cannot be rushed. We will confirm when we see the wheels.
Is powder coating better than paint for wheels?
For wheels, yes. It is harder, more chip-resistant and far more resistant to brake dust and road chemicals, because it is oven-cured into a continuous shell rather than air-dried.
Can you powder coat over my existing finish?
No — it gets stripped first. Coating over an old or failing finish means the new surface fails when the old one underneath does.
Can you match a specific colour?
Yes, including manufacturer colour codes and custom candy and metallic finishes. Bring the code or the part and we will work to it.
