Wheel Polishing

Wheel polishing & rim restoration.

Costa Mesa, CABy appointment(949) 800-8502

Rim polishing is the finish that shows every shortcut. Done properly it is a mirror; done quickly it is a haze that comes back within a month. This is the slowest work we do, and the most obvious when it is right.

What we polish

Why polished wheels dull

Bare polished aluminium has no clear coat by design — that is what gives it depth a lacquered wheel cannot match. The trade-off is that it oxidises. Brake dust is mildly acidic, wheel cleaners are often strongly alkaline, and both attack an unprotected surface. What starts as a mirror goes cloudy, then pits.

A polished wheel is a maintained wheel. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you a finish you will be disappointed by.

The process

  1. Strip. Any remaining clear coat comes off completely. Polishing through a partial coat leaves a patchy, cloudy result.
  2. Repair first. Kerb damage is machined out before polishing — see curb rash repair. Polish highlights every defect rather than hiding it.
  3. Progressive grits. Working from coarse to fine, each stage removing the scratch pattern of the one before. Skipping a grade is the single most common cause of a hazy finish.
  4. Final buff. Rouge and a soft wheel to bring the mirror up.
  5. Optional seal. A clear coat trades a little depth for much less maintenance. We will talk you through whether it is worth it for how you use the car.

Polish, or powder coat?

An honest steer: if the car is a weekend or show vehicle and you enjoy maintaining it, polish. If it is a daily driver parked outside through a Southern California summer, powder coating in a satin or gloss finish will look better for longer with none of the upkeep. We would rather you were happy in two years than impressed on collection day.

Common questions

How long does polished wheel finish last?

With regular cleaning and an occasional re-polish, indefinitely. Left to brake dust and harsh wheel cleaner, a mirror finish can dull within months — bare polished aluminium has no clear coat, which is exactly why it looks the way it does.

Can you re-polish wheels that have gone cloudy?

Yes. Oxidation and water spotting are removed by taking the surface back through progressive grits and re-buffing. If pitting has started, more material has to come off, so earlier is cheaper.

Should I clear coat polished wheels?

It is a trade-off. Clear coat cuts maintenance dramatically but slightly flattens the depth of the mirror. For a daily driver we usually recommend it; for a show car, usually not.

Do you paint wheels as well as polish them?

Yes. Wheel painting, powder coating and colour changes are all done in the Costa Mesa shop, and we will tell you which finish suits how the car is actually used.
