Diamond cutting is the only wheel finish that cannot be repaired with paint. The bright, precise face comes off a lathe, and the only way to restore it is to put the wheel back on one — which is also why it is the finish most often botched.

What diamond cutting actually is
A diamond-cut wheel is machined, not painted. The wheel is mounted on a lathe and a fine tool skims the face, leaving very fine concentric grooves in bare aluminium. Those grooves catch light in a way paint cannot imitate — that is the whole point of the finish, and it is why the industry also calls it a machined face.
The recessed areas between the spokes are usually painted (commonly black, silver or gunmetal), and the whole face is then sealed under a thin lacquer. That two-tone construction — bare machined metal beside paint, under one clear layer — is what makes the finish look expensive and what makes it fragile.
How to tell if you have one
Look at the face in direct sunlight. If you can see fine circular rings, like the grooves on a record, that is a machined face. Run a fingernail lightly across it and you may feel the texture.

Why the finish fails the way it does
The lacquer over a machined face is thin, and bare aluminium sits directly beneath it. Once that layer is breached — by a kerb, a stone chip, or an aggressive acidic wheel cleaner — moisture reaches the metal and it begins to corrode.
It shows as a milky white bloom spreading outward under the clear coat, often starting at the outer edge. That is not dirt and it will not polish out; the corrosion is beneath the lacquer, not on top of it.
It does not stop on its own. Every month of delay means more material has to be machined away to reach clean metal.
Why paint is not a repair
The most common bad repair on a diamond-cut wheel is a silver aerosol over the damaged section. It fails immediately and obviously: paint has no grain, so the repaired area goes flat and dull while the rest of the face still catches light. From three metres, in any daylight, you can see exactly where the repair stops.

How many times can a wheel be re-cut?
Not indefinitely, and this is the question good shops answer honestly. Each cut removes material from the face. Do it too many times and the face becomes too thin to be safe — the wheel is structurally compromised even though it looks fine.
The practical number depends on how much was taken each previous time, which is why a wheel that has been through a cheap refurb already may have less life left than one that has never been touched. We measure before cutting and tell you where the wheel stands. If it has been cut too often, we say so rather than take one more pass.
Living with a machined finish
- Use pH-neutral wheel cleaner. Acidic and strongly alkaline cleaners attack the lacquer, and that is the layer protecting the bare metal.
- Deal with chips early. A stone chip through the lacquer is a corrosion entry point, and corrosion is what turns a cheap repair into an expensive one.
- Consider the alternative. If a wheel has already been cut close to its limit, powder coating the set is a durable way to keep the car looking right without removing any more material.

That is corrosion beneath the clear coat, the standard failure mode for a machined face once the lacquer is breached. It cannot be polished out because the damage is under the lacquer, and it spreads until the wheel is refinished.
Is diamond cutting the same as a machined face?
Yes — the terms are used interchangeably for the same process. Some manufacturers also call it a polished or brushed machined finish, but the repair requirement is identical: it has to be re-cut.
