Tesla Wheel Repair: Fixing Model 3 and Model Y Curb Rash Without Dealer Pricing

August 4, 2026Monaco WheelsCosta Mesa, CA

Tesla wheels get kerbed more than most, and Tesla quotes replacement more readily than most. Both of those facts have specific technical reasons, and neither means you need a new wheel.

Why Tesla wheels kerb so easily

It is not driver error, or not only driver error. Several design choices stack up:

Repair versus Tesla replacement

Tesla service centres generally do not perform cosmetic wheel refinishing — they will quote a replacement wheel plus labour, because that is the process available to them. For a 20" Induction or a 21" Überturbine, that is a substantial bill for what is, structurally, an undamaged wheel.

Cosmetic curb rash does not compromise a wheel. Removing and rebuilding the damaged section restores both the appearance and the protective finish, at a fraction of replacement cost. Multiply that across a set and the difference is not marginal.

A kerbed wheel is a finish problem. Replacement solves it by throwing away the 95% that was never damaged.

What is different about the work

Aero covers

Model 3 and Model Y Gemini wheels ship with removable aero covers. If you have kerbed the cover rather than the wheel, that is a much simpler and cheaper conversation — and worth checking before you book anything. Pop one off and look at the wheel underneath. Many drivers discover the alloy is untouched.

Finish matching

Tesla uses several distinct finishes across Induction, Überturbine, Gemini and Arachnid wheels — including two-tone and machined faces. Matching one repaired wheel to three originals is the actual difficulty, more than the repair itself. A machined face has to be re-cut, not painted to imitate the grain.

Weight and balance

EVs are less forgiving of imbalance because there is no engine noise to mask vibration, and the drivetrain transmits it directly. Every wheel we return gets checked for runout and rebalanced.

Also worth knowing

If you are repairing all four anyway, this is the natural moment to change the finish — satin black, gunmetal and bronze are the common requests on Model 3 and Model Y, and powder coating a full set costs little more than refinishing them in the original colour. We also do caliper paint and chrome delete, which are frequently booked alongside.

Common questions

Can Tesla wheels be repaired instead of replaced?

Yes. Cosmetic curb rash and scratches on Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X wheels are repairable. Replacement is only necessary when a wheel is cracked in a structural area, which kerb contact rarely causes.

Does Tesla repair curb rash on wheels?

Tesla service centres generally quote wheel replacement rather than cosmetic refinishing, because refinishing is not part of their service process. Independent specialists repair the existing wheel for considerably less.

Will wheel repair affect my Tesla warranty?

Cosmetic refinishing of a wheel does not affect the vehicle's powertrain or battery warranty. Wheels are a wear-and-cosmetic item.

Is it the wheel or the aero cover that is damaged?

On Gemini wheels, the aero cover is removable — pull it off and inspect the alloy underneath. A surprising number of kerb strikes only damage the plastic cover, which is a much cheaper fix.

Can you powder coat Tesla wheels a different colour?

Yes. Satin black, gunmetal and bronze are the most common on Model 3 and Model Y. If you are already refinishing a set, a colour change adds very little to the cost.
